Event Details

Delivered by Karen Ardley Associates, this interactive course consists of 4 modules which are designed to help coaches and mentors to understand the skills and attitudes required for excellent mentorship.

It will take place over 4 sessions of 1.5h each: 23, 30 May, 6, 13 June; 08.30-10.00 BST (UTC+1).

Bitesize 1: Mentoring – what’s it all about? (23rd May 2022)
This module explores the history and background to mentoring and identifies the key principles involved in working as a mentor with colleagues.

Bitesize 2: Mentoring and Coaching Skills: Listening (30th May 2022)
There are key skills which good coaches and mentors need to practice. Good listening is at the top of the list. Listening is not as easy or as straightforward as we may imagine. We need to listen to understand our coachee/mentee rather than listening to reply. This module explores different reasons to listen and levels of listening. Improving your listening has the potential to benefit all aspects of your life.

Bitesize 3: Mentoring and Coaching Skills: Questioning (6th June 2022)
Among the key skills demonstrated by good coaches and mentors, questioning is key. It is great to work with someone who asks you questions which promote reflection, encourage problem-solving and help to identify solutions and possible actions. In this module, we will help you to improve your questioning techniques and skills, enabling you to offer support to your coachees and mentees.

Bitesize 4: Mentoring and Coaching Skills: Giving Advice (13th June 2022)
This module explores the potentially thorny topic of giving advice. Coaches work hard to enable their coaches to find their own solutions and we try not to give advice. However, there are situations where advice is requested or necessary. In this module we explore what a coach/mentor needs to consider and how best to offer advice to colleagues. The modules are designed to be stand alone modules or can be taken as a sequence.

Target audience
School-based professionals who have heard about coaching but have not used it in their work. For those who are curious and keen to explore if this powerful professional tool is for them, or experienced coaches who would like a refresher on their coaching skills.
